10 free items you can get with the Amex Business Platinum’s $100 Dell statement credit

With hefty annual fees, come equally hefty card perks. After you get over the initial shock of the $595 annual fee (see rates and fees) on The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, the travel and business-like benefits help make this card worth the price for many.

One of those perks is an up to $200 annual statement credit towards Dell purchases. That’s split up as a statement credit for up to $100 on U.S. Dell purchases between January and June and another credit for up to $100 off U.S. Dell purchases between July and December.

Whether your home office is in need of an upgrade or you’re looking to save money on the latest tech, there are a surprising number of useful products that Dell offers. The credit can be used toward your total purchase at Dell, but if you are looking to truly get something for $0 out of pocket, there are dozens of items that you can buy for $100 or less.

Please note that you must register for the statement credit prior to making your purchase for it to count. Below are 10 items you can “buy” with your $100 Dell credit.

What doesn’t work to trigger the credit

Dell gift cards can seem like an easy way of maximizing the statement credit — banking funds for a larger purchase later. Unfortunately, Dell doesn’t sell its own gift cards directly. Additionally, international transactions, international contact center, Global events, Dell Financial Services, Dell Outlet for Home, Dell Outlet for Work, Dell PartnerDirect, Dell Premier, Dell Premier Connect, Dell Premier Select and authorized retailers are also excluded.

Maximizing your purchase

Before you make your purchase, make sure to register for the Dell statement credit. And while you’re on the American Express website, check your Amex Offers to see if your Amex Business Platinum is targeted for an Amex Offer on Dell purchases, like the offers that were targeted to some cardholders last year.

Keep in mind that the terms may specify that you need to make the purchases through Dell.com/amex. So, you’ll probably want to use that link if you want to utilize an Amex Offer. However, if you aren’t targeted — or if you find a better offer — you can click through a cash-back portal such as Rakuten (which can now earn Amex Membership Rewards points) to maximize your purchase. Right now, Rakuten is offering 2% back, but the Top Cashback portal is offering 4% if you’d rather go with cash back rewards compared to points.

Or you can maximize your return by booking through an airline portal that’s offering bonus miles for Dell purchases. For example, multiple airline portals are offering bonuses for shopping at the Dell Outlet:

Although the miles/points per dollar spent have dropped from past levels, you can still stack these promotions and end up getting a free item — after the statement credit — plus cash back on top of that. That’s not bad for a credit card perk that just doubled in value.

Bottom line

With the calendar now reset at the start of the year, you’ll want to make sure to max out your $100 credit before June. With Dell selling a ton of different items, you should have no problem finding the next new piece of technology or gadget for your family. But don’t forget to register for the promotion before you use the Amex Business Platinum Dell credit.
